The campaign for at least 50% representation of women in our Parliament, in our councils and on public boards

Why 50/50?

Today, despite making up 52% of the population, in Scotland women only make up 42% of public board members, 25% of public board chairs, 35% of MSPs and 29% of Councillors. It's not good enough, and it is estimated that unless radical change is pursued, it would take another 50 years for us to reach an equal parliament.

Despite some progress, the governance of our country - in our council chambers and in our parliament - is still dominated by men. We believe the only way to achieve a balance in public life, so that our elected representatives reflect our society as it is, is through legal quotas. We want a Scotland where all women, particularly working class women, black and minority ethnic women, disabled women and carers have access to power they are, too often, shut out of.

What we are asking the Scottish Parliament to support:
Simply, we want legislation which would mean all parties have to put forward at least 50% women candidates in the Scottish Parliament and Council elections.

Has your MSP signed up?

We're proud of the cross party support the campaign has gained so far. Four out of five of the party leaders in Scotland have signed up to the campaign, including the First Minister Nicola Sturgeon. We have over a third of the MSPs in the Scottish Parliament backing us, all we need now is action.
